Colon cancer risks no higher in treated coeliac disease

By: Peter Olins, PhD on February 7, 2014.

A recent study from Argentina found that celiacs on a strict gluten-free diet had no increased colorectal cancer, compared to the general population. However, there was a 7-fold increased risk of adenoma associated with poor compliance with a GF diet. It should be stressed that “association” doesn’t automatically mean “cause-and-effect”, since there may be other unknown factors.

This is an initial study, and will need to be repeated with larger numbers of patients, in different countries, before we can draw any firm conclusions.
